Shades of…

BLUE. Not Grey! This is a PG blog; get your head out of the gutter.

After my introduction to Gio Ponti’s work a few years ago, I have found that ever since, I tend to gravitate towards his aesthetic. I have however recently, felt particularly inspired by his work. I like to think of Ponti not as simply an artist or designer, but rather, as a prolific and prophetic creator. His own existence depended solely on his ability to discover and create. In his vast career he was an architect, product designer, poet, teacher, costume designer, furniture designer, collaborator; he worked with pottery, rugs and founded two magazines. He knew what the world needed, and knew how it should look. To say that his body of work is impressive would be a grave understatement and a disservice to his legacy. Working upwards of 10 hours a day, his work ethic and deep focus are also of huge motivation to me.

But with a little background under our belts, let us move back to ‘blue.’ The pictures you see accompanying this text, are images of the Parco dei Principi hotel in Sorrento, Italy. From the tile floors, to the modular wardrobes, to the simple blue coverlets, Gio Ponti designed the entire hotel from top to bottom. Overlooking the Amalfi Coast, each room boasts a stunning kaleidoscope of cool blues, almost mirroring the sparkling ocean, just outside of the windows below. Even though the palette is monochromatic, it doesn’t feel cold. There are lighter shades and darker shades, accented by spare but warm, wooden furniture.

Choosing bedding for the apartment is one of the last few puzzle pieces necessary for pulling our place together. Regardless of how many Pinterest boards and sites for big box stores that I click through, I keep returning to Ponti’s Principi palette (from 1962, I might add!). Despite the 50-year gap between when the hotel was designed and now, is a testament to the sustainability and brilliance of his work.

As of yet, I have not found a single thing that captures the way these images make me feel. So I am wondering if perhaps I’ll have to make something myself. Would Ponti appreciate the homage on my duvet, or would he tell me to create something completely new? Would I follow the blue palette or embrace the geometry? Hmmm… better get sketching.

Living Mod: An Afternoon with Eames

When I was a little girl, my Grandmother bought me a subscription to Harper’s Bazaar and continued to do so, every year through college. I distinctly remember being around fifteen or so, and anxiously flipping through an issue I’d just snapped up from the mailbox. As always, I dutifully read Editor-in-Chief and idol Glenda Bailey’s foreword, skipped to my horoscope and then began moving through the magazine’s content. I remember that I had gotten to the last third of the issue when my hand fell flat across the pages and for a moment, my heart stopped. Ironically, this reaction was not the result of discovering Kate Moss in a canary-yellow Gucci jacket (á la Tom Ford) nor stumbling upon a smoldering Julianne Moore, clad in Balenciaga with an almost invisible waist (though both did garner an audible gasp). The photographs and story had little to do with fashion at all: rather, they showcased the stunning exterior and interior of a sprawling single-story home in the Hollywood Hills. Built in the 50’s, it was a mid-century masterpiece: floor-to-ceiling windows providing breath-taking views of Los Angeles and a floor-plan masterfully laid out for the ultimate in entertaining of cocktail, dinner and pool parties. I was smitten.

It wasn’t until much later that I discovered the work of Pierre Koenig, his legendary  “Case Study House No. 22” (obsessed) and the intelligent post-war modernism that came to define an era. It continues to blow me away how these architects, designers and their passionate patrons so carefully created spaces and products that optimized the climate and natural beauty of their surroundings while at the same time, remaining efficient and cost-conscious. Mid-century modern design was innovative yet intuitive, and it is no accident that it has sustained to this day.

…Which brings me to an exhibit that I recently visited at the LACMA: California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way.” Closing in just a few days, the exhibit opened during the citywide art event Pacific Standard Time, earlier this year. Upon entering the museum, visitors follow a winding path that begins with a vintage Airstream camper and then walks them through an extensive collection of textiles, furniture, toys, blue-prints, print-work, even electronics. While showcases like this one can often be superficial, the LACMA did a fine job of getting below the surface and displaying an incredibly thoughtful array of objects, sounds and ideas from a bygone era. In fact, the exhibit even houses an actual replica of Charles and Ray Eames’s living room, complete with windows, doors, furniture, even throw pillows and plants! There are also video interviews that you can sit down and listen to by yourself with headphones; I chose Deborah Sussman.

I learned so much about the process behind which all of the aforementioned things were designed and how vast the reach of the modernist movement in California, was and has been. It makes so much sense to me why architects and builders now build modular, glass homes on hilltops and shorelines; how else are you able to completely immerse yourself in your natural surroundings? Likewise, it is no mystery why the Eames molded plastic chair for Herman Miller can be found in almost any interior design magazine that you flip through today. The Jetson-esque chair is a versatile, affordable and whimsical piece of furniture. It’s also incredibly comfortable for adults and durable for children.

I urge you to go see California Design for yourself: you won’t be disappointed. Spanning so many different avenues of media and approach, there is literally something for everyone.

Horses & Hats

Aside from the spring Fashion Weeks, no single event embraces spring style more than the Kentucky Derby! The feminine dresses, delicate heels and of course… the HATS. The cultural phenomenon of sartorial pomp and circumstance that the Kentucky Derby generates is something I can only thank that fashion gods for. It has become a fun and fashionable event worth paying attention to… for more than just the horses! To be honest, I wish that women had more of these items in their closets and donned fabulous hats more often than just for horse races. I mean, we all saw the pictures of Will and Kate’s wedding and weren’t we all a bit jealous that we couldn’t just step outside with enormous tulle bows on our heads, without receiving puzzled looks in return? I am a huge proponent of big hats and in fact, have been wearing them since I was a toddler… I will have to dig those photos out later…

And as for the race itself, I’ve got my eye on I’ll Have Another. With a fantastic name and a star on his forehead, I’ve got a good feeling about this one. Who will you be rooting for? And more importantly, what will you be wearing?

Interior Love at the Louvre

I just adore clean lines. I think it has something to do with knowing what you are getting into. You can’t hide things under or in between clean lines; what you see is what you get. It also has something to do with feeling fresh and vibrant, letting colors stand out on center stage. Giving them an opportunity to compliment each other, rather than compete.

You can imagine my surprise and delight, after strolling the grand halls of the Louvre, when I wandered into this bright and modern space. Such a playful juxtaposition with the beautiful, though heavily layered and decorative rooms of the Napoleon Apartments mere steps away.

I was so pleasantly surprised when entering this café. It wasn’t shocking to walk into the simple avocado and white-striped space even after observing such decadent and detailed interiors. This is because the Louvre so brilliantly achieved what so many cannot seem to do: they created a contemporary space that doesn’t feel cold. Rather, the room feels warm and inviting, like a perfectly manicured hand waving you in for a refreshing glass of hmm… Perrier?

Paris When it Sizzles

This time next week I will be in Paris.

I can hardly contain myself! Obvious reasons aside, can you guess why I am so excited? Well a., I have been dreaming of going to Paris/ living in Paris since I was a little girl and b., I am croissant-obsessed! I am also an Audrey Hepburn super-fan if such things exist, and have dreamed through her films for years, pretending to celebrate Bastille Day outside a charming café on a lively street and dancing the night away as Jo Stockton in a nightclub. I am also excited because we will be making a small trip to Brussels for two nights and I probably don’t need to go into my chocolate addiction… Oh I cannot wait to drop into Poilâne for a crusty loaf of sourdough and sit leisurely outside of Café Metro, sipping a petite glass of vin rouge! …Éclairs from Pierre Hermé? Yes, yes, yes!

I think it is also mandatory that I rent une bicyclette to ride along the Siene…

…If I don’t come back, you know why!

The Cream of the Crop

This time last week I was sipping on champagne/ whiskey (both)… while taking above picture and/or seriously getting down to some funky tunes being spun by The Flashdance DJ Michael, beneath over-sized Geronimo Balloons and disco balls.

Where was I, you ask? I will tell you: I was at the fun/frivolous/fabulous fete otherwise known as The Cream Event, a wedding showcase thrown by the adorable and awesome girls behind Bash, Please. No, I am not getting married anytime soon, but I knew that the Rue girls were in some way involved and if anything, I had to check out the event for some blog/life inspiration. And boy- was it an inspiring evening! The colors, the music, the food and the fashion! I was in absolute design heaven! I won’t get into too much detail about the evening, but will tell you this: I met some incredibly talented people, inhaled some lamb ragout lasagna, talked to a bedazzled Maltese on a pink chair and left with fake eyelashes on and a goodie bag in hand, that included a neon/gold boutineer! All in all a successful night!

I highly recommend checking it out next year as an incredible resource for of course weddings, but any kind of event planning. There were so many unique vendors and artists involved.

For more details and information about the event, click here and here. See you at The Cream Event next year!

Saturday

Today is Saturday. It’s a little gray for LA and all I can do is sit in my bed and daydream through endless clicks on beautiful blogs and online inspiration. I’m tired… and I feel like today should just be one of those days. You know the kind to which I am referring: the quiet, slow, take a moment to breathe and eat a grilled cheese kind of day.

Philip and I moved into our new place last weekend and have yet to unpack another ten [big] boxes or so. The desk and sofa are still in shrink-wrap and our clothes are in neat little piles in the closet and against the bedroom wall (no dresser either). So today won’t be one of those days that I have described above.

We’ve actually got to clean, unpack and make a trip to Ikea before the sun sets.

But it’s only 8am… and it’s fun to dream.

{DIY} Valentine’s Day

Remember those 2×3 cards printed with Disney Princesses, Tonka Trucks and Powder Puff girls? There was often a cherry-flavored, heart-shaped lollipop attached to the aforementioned with a little piece of Scotch tape. These flimsy, little treasures were collected in cereal boxes covered with construction paper or miniature red and pink mailboxes from the dollar store. I’m referring to the valentines of our childhood my friends, the ones we scribbled on, stickered and traded with our classmates, teachers and loved ones. Even though I am “technically” a grown-up (by the way, what constitutes being grown-up?), I still covet those little cards in the holiday section of the drug store and get nostalgic when I spy the long cellophane-wrapped strips of lollipops hanging from the metals rungs of a store shelf.

I absolutely love Valentine’s Day. I don’t love it for the “girly” reasons you might think: receiving flowers, jewelry and expensive dinners (although, all are indeed welcome!). Rather I adore this holiday for the simple reason that it celebrates love, itself. It’s an opportunity to reach out to family, friends, co-workers, and tell them the things that often go unsaid. It’s the perfect time to express your fondness, appreciation and of course love, for all of those important people in your life. I have to stand against the bitter naysayers who label the 14th of February as a mere “Hallmark Holiday.” It is so much more than that! Which brings me back to those little cards I mentioned above…

I love sending and receiving valentines. And I love it when they are handmade, with various papers, glitter, ribbon, paint- I’ve used it all! This year though, I drew miniature illustrations with pencils and markers and mounted them on solid and polka-dotted pink card stock. I also incorporated either some ribbon or red thread where necessary… I am sending them out to friends and family all over the place {world}. I hope that you are inspired to make some too… I promise they will make whomever you choose to give them to, feel loved and appreciated.

 Happy Valentine’s Day!

A Few of My Favorite Things: Valentine’s Day Ed.

What a week! Is it really Friday already? I apologize for my posts becoming less frequent as of late; I have literally been on the go since Tuesday of last week! My days have been consumed by endless cookie-baking (and naturally endless cookie-eating), various trips into the city, the recent and *cough annoying snow storm as well as a few small side-projects… However by just Thursday, I can proudly say that my Valentine’s Day orders were finished and delivered! This morning I will spend finishing up my own Valentines, for the people I love. Some will be receiving hand-made cards, while others will get small boxes/bags filled with yummy treats. Unfortunately, I have also been battling a cold/ sinus infection this week as well… Not one to typically slow down, I have found it especially difficult to get my act together yesterday and today. I almost passed out on the treadmill at the gym yesterday morning! I know- scary! Thank God I didn’t; I’d like to keep my face in one piece, thank you! (Today’s trip to the gym was quickly vetoed…)

As you can tell, this is a slightly unorthodox post for me, but I hope you’ll enjoy clicking below and scrolling through my different V-Day projects and inspiration.

Lots of Love!

Lauren

Here are some tags I made for a cookie order. Cute, right? On the back they said,

“Handcrafted with Love.” awwww

Whoa! Just under 80 cookies in this box…

Look at my little guys… don’t you just love their bow-ties?

Sorry, photography is not really my thing. I’m working on it. :/

These were for a smaller order… So heavy- so delicious!!

I made these for friends and family, which is why they aren’t uniform… I kind of prefer them this way. The white chocolate looks more like paint splatters.

More cookies for friends and family…

Gotta love Target! 1 package of these Valentine’s Day kraft paper bags (12ct.), was only $1!

How sweet are these measuring cups? If you’ve got little ones, V-Day is a great time to get them their own little baking set and put it to use- together!

(Some of these were taken on different days. Hence, the bizarre change of light.)

Send handmade cards! Make a scrapbook!

Here are two brilliant handmade cards that I received, from two of my favorite little girls…

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

How lovely are thy branches? With gingerbread and frosting too; you smell so good, I could eat you… Oh Christmas tree…

Back from the city and plopped in front of the fireplace, I write this completely content with being snowed in. After a hectic weekend with equally hectic weather to match, it feels soooooo good to be all snuggly and warm in front of the fire. While I never made it downtown to the epic “Cookie Swap,” I did make it to the Rockefeller tree, just before the snow started coming down. And as I stood beneath the tree’s mammoth branches (from Easton, CT, FYI), I couldn’t help but wonder how magnificent Midtown would smell, if the entire tree was hung with my “Gingerbread Ornaments.”

Unfortunately while making my Gingerbread Ornaments, I didn’t have any coarse sanding sugar at hand, nor the time to run out and get some. So, they came out a little less cute than I had planned. They would have sparkled like the snow sitting outside my window, had I been able to cover them with the right sugar. But with or without it, they still smell delicious and look pretty darn cute. Here is a picture of one hanging on my tree; I made an ornament for each member of my family and piped on each of our respective initials:

For directions on how to make your own Gingerbread Ornaments, continue after the jump!
