Still here; I promise!

Hello bunnies!! I am so sorry to have fallen behind on my posting… it has been crazy for me these past two weeks! I promise there will be some good stuff up here, very soon…

Fortunately in the midst of all the insanity, I got a chance to visit my amazingly talented friend Alice (more on her, very soon), in the West Hartford area. Not only did we have a seriously delicious lunch at Besito, but she also took me to visit a diary farm in Simsbury, where I had the most incredible American ice cream that I have ever tasted. I do not use such praise lightly and Tulmeadow Dairy Farm, has without a doubt, made it to the to the number one spot of my top three. (The Inside Scoop, formerly Brickley’s in North Kingstown, RI is now #2 and Mike’s Ice Cream In Hood River, OR is #3.) When I tell you this place took the joy of eating ice cream to an entirely new level, it literally took the joy of eating ice cream to an ENTIRELY new level! It was deliciously creamy and rich while still tasting so very fresh, similar to an Italian gelato.

In other news..

Cupcake Camp New Haven is really coming together! I am also officially a sponsor, with Sweet Lilly Bakery! Yipee!

I made Ina Garten’s wonderful Maple-Oat Scones this week to add to a cookie order… ch ch check it out…

AND- LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST: Do not forget to e-mail me (sweetlillybakery@gmail.com) your favorite cookie and why, with your respective contact information, to enter my drawing for a ticket to Taste of the Nation!

xx

Surviving Cupcake Camp NYC

From the harried hipsters rushing in and out of sauna rooms in hot pursuit of sugary treasure, to the anxious bakers quickly trying to unload the fruits of their painstaking labor onto any remaining bar space, the East Village’s Happy Ending club was a frenzy of activity last Friday. The “what” was Cupcake Camp NYC, the “who” was a mass of people, comprised of bakers who hailed from all over the country and “eaters,” most of whom were local Manhattanites. In my personal experience, it was one of the most hectic, claustrophobic and confusing events I have ever attended. I am pretty certain the experience was the result of one enormous and collective sugar rush. Needless to say, I couldn’t get my cupcakes out of their carriers and onto their displays, fast enough. I actually opted against unloading my 4-tiered “cupcake tower,”  and chose to leave my “Chunky Monkey Cupcakes” in their respective container. (I later regretted this decision when the same container was stolen… not cool.) Because of the pace at which I had to unload my goods, this meant that any photos had to also be taken with great speed. Unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough to get my camera out of my purse and was only able snap some pictures with my Blackberry. Thank you so much to Kelli Iassogna who was able to get a real picture for me!

Despite the fact that the evening was not quite what I expected, I did have a good time and met some fantastic people! Not only did I get to chat with Jennifer Appel (founder of Magnolia Bakery and Buttercup Bake Shop), but I also got to swap baking tips with the incredibly sweet Jennifer Ross, author of The Icing on the Cupcake. Meeting those two was totally awesome, but I would be remiss if I did not mention the awesome little cakes that I got to eat and admire!

First off, Kelli Iassogna’s “Samoa Cupcake” was hands-down, the best one I tried all night and basically just outrageous! Her friend Jodie brought a “Thin Mint Cupcake,” also delicious. Someone made a “Vanilla-Spiced Cupcake with Maple Frosting” that was really great, and I bit into an incredibly rich “Chocolate-Orange Cupcake,” but don’t know who made either of those. Anny of annycakes.com, made some of the most beautiful and ornate cupcakes I have ever seen and understandably ran out, before I was able to eat one.

I apologize for the poor quality of these pictures but I really did my best!

Here are my “Bellini Cupcakes” right before they left for the city.

Vanilla cake with icing made from peach puree, pear juice, fresh raspberries and powdered sugar. Yum!

These are my “Chunky Monkey Cupcakes;” banana cake with my “Spiced Peanut Butter Buttercream,” chocolate chunks and each topped with a slice of fried banana. Disregard all of the mail/papers on my kitchen table! So embarrassing!

The pretty little cupcakes at their final destination…

Ladies and gentlemen: New York legend, Jennifer Appel.

The fabulous Jennifer Ross.

After a car ride home of e-mails and brainstorming, Kelli and Jodie have decided to organize a CT edition of Cupcake Camp, right here in New Haven!! So cool, right? The plan is to pull off a more organized and interactive event!! The ladies are currently looking for a poster designer, sponsors, bakers and all-around cupcake lovers! Check out the website here, and register for your FREE tickets today!

Phone Pix: Sweetness from the OC

You may be wondering just how on Earth, one could possibly consume as much sugar as I do, on a regular basis. You may also be wondering how I manage to eat so much of it, during a single week in California. I often wonder the same things myself, but then remember that when I lived in NYC, I hit up a combination of Tasti D Lite, Balthazar and whatever cupcake shops were in the closest vicinity to my current digs and/or subway stop, pretty much daily.

But I digress; this post is all about Orange County and its delicious, sugary offerings. My first stop upon arriving, was at Layer Cake Bakery in Irvine, where I took Thomas’s advice and went to check out their macarons. Maybe they were having an off-day, because the macaron variety and general dessert selection wasn’t that impressive, but this doesn’t mean I left empty-handed. I picked up a “Coconut Macaron” and a small coffee and was definitely satisfied with what I tasted. It’s been so long since I’ve had a macaron and I guess I forgot just how wonderful it is when the airiness of the cookie sandwich and the smoothness of the filling come together in each glorious bite. Yum, yum, yum!

That same afternoon, found me in Laguna Beach, with warm sunshine glowing down the coast and a few hours to kill. If you’ve ever ventured to the South Coast highway where it runs through Laguna, I am sure you are familiar with a smell that can only be described as “pure heaven,” wafting down a small brick alleyway and out onto the sidewalk. If you’re feeling adventurous and stroll down said alleyway (as I did twice this week), you will find a beautiful chocolate shop and a small gelato shop, side-by-side. Gelato Paradiso is an Orange County gelato chain, with deliciously creamy gelato, and perfectly soft/crunchy waffle cones that they make all day long. The gelato itself is also fresh, as the flavors are made daily, in small sumptuous batches. Their “Panna Cotta” is to die for, so of course I needed some of that… I also ordered “Cookies and Cream,” which did not disappoint!I should mention though, that I often order their “Stracciatella” or “Gianduia” and I highly recommend them both!

With some Easter candy and cookies of my own in between, I didn’t go out in search of anymore sweetness until the Farmer’s Market rolled around on Saturday. Let me tell you, it was worth the couple-of-days wait! I had been looking forward to a “Berry Cream Cheese Croissant” ever since I touched down in Santa Ana at the beginning of the week and I literally skipped over to Blackmarket Bakery’s stall, in hopes of finding that indulgent pastry. While I dug into my fruit-filled croissant, Philip had an equally-tasty “Almond Croissant.” Blackmarket loves butter and they know how to use it! Their pastry dough is perfectly flaky and flavorful. They also gave us complimentary shortbread cookies, cut out in adorable Easter shapes!

“Little Peter-Cotton-Tail…”

…Hopping down, the sugar trail!

Happy Easter, peeps! I can’t believe it’s April already! As you know, I wouldn’t let a holiday go by without making some of my sugar cookie cut-outs. Easter is no exception (no matter my location)! After all, it was a few packages of cut-outs that I handed out this time, last year, that got ‘Sweet Lilly’ started! Time flies, doesn’t it? I’m in California for the week and upon arriving, wasted no time whipping up some cookies and getting my pastry bags out… In the next few days I plan to upload pictures of all that I’ve been eating here; a little SoCal food tour if you will, via Tumblr. So enjoy your holiday weekend, check out the view below, and click to see some more pictures of my cookies after the jump!

Lauren

The lighting in these is a little weird, but anyway, here goes…

See my sugary, little, cotton-tailed bunnies? I used pinches of coarse sanding sugar and it worked perfectly!

Butterfly, meet Chick. Chick, meet Bunny. Ah, Easter friends.

Certainly not Faberge, but I think this will do…
